The first CSC HPC Summer School: over and out

CSC organized a summer school in scientific and high-performance computing on June 12-20, 2010.

The first CSC Summer School in Scientific and High-Performance Computing was held on June 12-20, 2010. It featured intense learning (29 sessions altogether, three hours each, three sessions per day, some in parallel), intense physical exercising (three sports sessions each day, one in the morning, one afternoon and one in the evening), and intense relaxation (three banquets, five sauna evenings). One participant said that a subtitle for the school could have been "You may rest later"; I cannot disagree there :-) The school was organized in Solvalla in Nuuksio, Espoo. It had 37 participants all around Europe, with a majority of Finns. The group photo can be found at

These were from at least ten different scientific disciplines, from cosmology to economics. Hopefully the school fed international and interdisciplinary discussion and collaboration!

The school was a success. It was sold out before the early-bird registration ended, and all the participants were very satisfied and happy with the school. The lectures were of very high quality and despite some Murphyisms (e.g. a 5-hour blackout in the opening day), practical arrangements worked just fine.

The lectures were delivered by Dr. Sebastian von Alfthan, Tommi Bergman, Dr. Ivan Degtyarenko, Dr. Jussi Enkovaara, Dr. Pekka Manninen, Dr. Tommi Nyrönen, Jarmo Pirhonen, Sami Saarinen, Joni Virtanen and Dr. Thomas Zwinger from CSC, together with guest stars Dr. Hongsuk Yi from KISTI as well as Dr. Teemu Murtola and Dr. Rossen Apostolov from Stockholm University.

There will be second summer school next year, for sure. We know already quite well which things to keep and which ones to modify. Hoping to see you there!
