General outlines, upcoming topics

Outline of the workstation environment at CSC and a list of upcoming blog topics.

CSC - IT Center for Science is a medium-sized company with 200+ workstations, servers and laptops to administer. We use centralised packaging and managing when possible, but changes can be done manually if so needed.

This creates a good environment to develop software packaging skills for an environment where workstations are used with user rights and software installation is limited. Our aim is to support windows and linux users equally, which puts an emphasis on standards compliance.

I plan to blog at least about the following topics in this blog, with enough techical details to be re-implemented in other organizations, home computers or whatnot.

  • Howto let Firefox and Thunderbird upgrade themselves with user rights
  • USB booting and the many ways of doing it
  • Mind what you try - learning is work too.
  • Installing Xming - a free X desktop emulator for windows
  • Reading RSS feeds - a worthy timesaver once you get the hang of it
  • Configuring finnish proofreading as a silent auto-install in
    OpenOffice windows
