Introduction to Biopython

Python is a modern, object-oriented programming language, which has become popular in several areas of software development.  Biopython is a collection of python program modules that facilitate quick development of python scripts for bioinformatics applications. With Python you can write scripts for sequence manipulation, accessing of databases using a range of data formats and execution and parsing of the results of various molecular biology programs.

Introduction to biopython course is an extension to the  course "Introduction to Python"  that is held one day  before this course (30.11.) This course  focuses to the bioinformatics specific issues of Python and to the Biopython module library.  We highly recommend that  participants of this course participate to the Introduction to Python course too as the basics of Python programming language are not discussed on this Biopython course.

The course consists of lectures and hands-on exercises.

The topics discussed on the course include:

  • Sequence objects
  • Sequence Records
  • Sequence input and output
  • Database search and retrieval with Entrez-tools
  • Running BLAST and parsing results

The fee covers course materials, lunches as well as morning and afternoon coffees. "Finnish academics" refers to employees and students of Finnish universities, regardless of their nationality.
