FreeNX-Remote Desktop speeds up remote graphical work over ten-fold

10.08.2011

CSC has launched a Remote Desktop as a new service in particular to make the use of graphical user interfaces more fluent. The service works with a NoMachine client which is installed on the reseacher's computer which connects to a FreeNX server component running at nxlogin.csc.fi. The service replaces the need for X-emulators or X-terminals from your own computer and speeds up the frame rate of graphical work 10-100 fold with respect to the said X11-connections.

To use the service, you need to install the NoMachine client-software on your own computer. The client is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. The software is configured according to the step-by-step instructions available in the Scientist's User Interface (see link below). You then connect to nxlogin.csc.fi with the NoMachine client software which opens a remote desktop. From the desktop you can (only) take an ssh connection to any of the CSC's computing servers. When you run a scientific application in one of these (as you would, say, via an XMing-connection) the graphics are shown efficiently through the NoMachine client and no X-emulation is needed. This makes remote graphics use efficient and comfortable.

To use the service you need to have a user account at CSC.

If for some reason following the step-by-step instructions does not work, please contact helpdesk and carefully describe the problem.
