Aalto University acquires new cluster capacity
09.03.2010
A new cluster system has been taken into use in the Aalto University of Technology. The new cluster is one of the most powerful supercomputers in Finland. It will serve researchers in computational sciences, material sciences, medical engineering and computer science. Vendor of the cluster system is Hewlett-Packard and CSC was consulting the purchase.
The new super-cluster improves capabilities of the Aalto University to do excellent computational research. The researchers in the Faculty of Information and Natural Sciences have access to new computing capacity in addition to the resources provided by the CSC.
More than one thousand computing cores and a fast message network provide computing capacity especially within the performance area between workstations and the Louhi, the most powerful supercomputer of CSC. The increased performance enables modeling and analyzing of bigger systems and more extensive data sets as well as employment of more accurate models by increasing number of researchers.
Research subjects vary from nanostructures and the new materials and energy engineering, to computational biophysics, medical rendering, genetic epidemiology, social networks, neural networks, machine learning, data mining and to modeling of computer networks and systems.
CSC
CSC - IT Center for Science Ltd. is a non-profit limited company administered by the Ministry of Education. Having core competences in modeling, computing and information services, CSC provides versatile IT services, support and resources for academia, research institutes, and companies. The Funet communication links provide research workers with Finland's widest selection of scientific software and databases and Finland's most powerful supercomputers.
