Eduroam spreading quickly within Funet organizations

02.07.2010

Eduroam, the international roaming access service, operated on the Funet network and aimed at students and staff of research and educational organizations, has gained five new members during the first part of 2010.

Since the beginning of the year five new higher education institutions have set up an eduroam roaming access service: Metropolia, the University of Eastern Finland, Vaasa University of Applied Sciences, Lappeenranta University of Technology, and HAMK University of Applied Sciences. Hence the use of eduroam is spreading and becoming visible at the national scale; when visiting another campus, a total of 160,000 users can automatically log into another organization’s wireless network from their own computers.

Visiting eduroam users are allowed easy and secured access on the basis of their own organization’s credentials. Eduroam is being widely used in different polytechnics and universities throughout Finland and Europe. Eduroam works also in Australia, the USA, and Canada. Eduroam roaming access is based on reciprocity between organizations. If organizations A and B are involved in a roaming contract, the users of organization A can use the public access network of organization B and vice versa.

”Funet has put a lot of work into gathering information from its member organizations to map the locations of eduroam access points, and the coverage map of Europe looks reasonably good from Finland’s point of view”, says Data Communications Specialist Wenche Backman from Funet Services.

”Higher education institutions have been informed about implementation of eduroam, and we have cautiously started marketing aimed at students and staff by, for example, producing demo videos for training and disseminating eduroam stickers for higher education institutions. Additionally, an up-to-date coverage map helps to locate eduroam hot spots.”
