CSC connected Russian research network to NORDUnet with fibre technology
28.01.2010
RUNNet, the Russian research network have got an advanced fibre optic connection to the West. It was connected to the NORDUnet using Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology at the end of 2009. Instead of the previous bandwidth of 2,5 Gbps, the new connection enables multiple parallel 10 Gbps paths.
Funet services of the CSC - IT Center for Science has been tightly involved in the planning and implementation of the connection. For example the physical switch is situated in the premises of CSC. The upgraded connection enables better changes to collaboration in various research areas with Russia and Finland and other Nordic and Central European countries as well.
With help of the DWDM technology it is possible to construct separate point-to-point connections, in other words light paths, between research institutes. They can be utilized for data transmission from observatories or other research instruments to data storages or research laboratories for analysis. The new connection enables the transmission of huge amount of data between Russian and European research institutes.
The new connection is paid jointly by NORDUnet and RUNNet.
