Finnish researchers have had access to national computing services since 1971, when a Univac 1108 mainframe computer was installed on the premises of the Finnish State Computer Centre. The machine had been bought with the financial support of the Finnish National Fund for Research and Development (Sitra) and was then the fastest computer type in Europe.
From the very beginning experts of various disciplines were hired
for user support. Later the activities expanded to cover
telecommunication networks, when the Finnish
University and Research Network, Funet was established in 1984.
During 2002-2008 CSC had several senior scientific advisers. The tasks of the scientific counselors included assessing and developing services provided by CSC, representing academia in the planning process of CSC, as well as enhancing CSC's contacts with the national and international research environment.
Today CSC is the Finnish IT center for science and provides
versatile computing, communication and data storage services as well
as scientific expertise for the whole of Finnish
research community.
