CSC opens a call for proposals for computational or data intensive grand challenge projects to academic reseachers. The call will be opened twice a year.
The
next deadline of the call for proposals is on 7th November 2011 at 12 o'clock.
The call is aimed at high-impact scientific research that requires computational resources exceeding CSC's standard project quotas or other level of services. Additional services may include priority execution arrangements, data processing, special storage arrangements, performance optimization, visualization or equivalent support.
Grand challenge projects have a fixed duration. The computational resources have to be consumed within 6-12 month period. Access to other resources may be longer depending on the needs. The projects will be executed in cooperation with CSC, and a project group will be assigned to each project.
The proposals will go through a technical and a scientific evaluation. The evaluation is based on the listed evaluation criteria.
- The technical evaluation is done by CSC’s staff. All necessary data for the technical evaluation should be included in the proposal. The technical evaluation is carried out to ensure that the project is realizable with CSC’s resources and that the project needs excessive resources.
- The scientific
evaluation is done by the Scientific Customer Panel, comprised of Finnish research group leaders in several scientific disciplines.
As a general guideline, projects will be mainly considered as grand challenges in this call if any of the following conditions are met:
- several million CPUh (= billing units) are needed to accomplish the results
- data storage requirement is over 1 TB and/or massive data I/O
- the projects require special attendance like code optimization, data analysis, processing, and archiving in addition to high resource needs
If this is not the case, the proposal can be sent as an ordinary resource application.
As most of CSC's computational resources are on the Louhi system, we encourage the projects to be executed on it. Large shared memory projects are more suitable to Hippu system.
The proposals
that have been accepted will be announced publicly, and therefore a public abstract of the research plan is
necessary. The proposals that have been rejected will be announced privately to
the applicant. In case you feel that your proposal has been misjudged, you have a right of appeal.
You have to use the Proposal Form for CSC Grand Challenge Project to submit your proposal.
