Your certificate represents your identity on the internet and the grid. They are used to authenticate (prove ones identity) to grid services. They can also be used to generate S/MIME signatures for emails that you send. Possession of a key and certificate does not automatically grant one access (Authorization) to resources on a grid.
Virtual Organizations
Authorization to a access a resource typically involves joining a Virtual Organization. Virtual Organizations are a way of grouping users. This simplifies management. A virtual organization can be approved for access to a resource as a whole as opposed to approving access for each user individually.
Virtual Organizations in the grid typically have their own policies and practices that a user must accept and be familiar with. This page lists contact information for some of the Virtual Organizations you may be eligible to join. If you have any questions feel free to contact grid-support at csc.fi.
