Additional information about CPU time applications and quotas

  • Upon receipt of your application, CSC issues a user account for you, provided that you are eligible and the information you have provided is complete.
  • User account applications for computing projects are processed by CSC User Manager, who can assign to the user CSC's initial quota (computing time and disk space). The customer receives a user name and password by mail. The letter also contains advice on how to act, should problems arise related to computers, passwords, accounts, or quota. For security reasons we do not send user names or passwords by e-mail.
  • For massive parallel computing on Louhi and Murska the user must establish the scalability of the used program. Hence, if scalability tests prove that the computing code is not suitable for massive parallel computing, the user account maybe be cancelled retroactively.
  • When less than 20% of the quota assigned for the project remains, the user receives an automatic reminder on login. When the total quota has been used, the user cannot run further computation batches until more CPU time has been applied and approved for the project. However, those jobs that are already running are completed, eventhough the project quota becomes negative during the run.
  • It is advisable to apply for additional CPU time well before the current quota is used up. The project user may apply for small and medium amounts of additional CPU time from User Manager by sending an e-mail to usermgr at csc.fi. A web-based CPU time application form is used for CPU time applications larger than 10 000 billing units (bu). Applications are forwarded for approval to the CSC Resource Allocation Group.
