The
service includes most of the free, must carry channels in Finland, like the cannels of YLE Finnish Broadcasting
company, MTV3, Nelonen, Sub, etc. There is also a growing number of other free channels available (see below). Organizations can also set up their own channel for internal, national or global distribution.
A regular organizational TV license is sufficient for watching the programs. The service operates via the viewer's own computer using the IPTV user interface which also offers a comprehensive program guide. The content can also be watched on a laptop computer.
With Funet Antenna, Finnish digital TV channels can be seen free of charge by Funet users without any additional equipment. The channels can be watched in the network of Funet organizations that support multicast connection. The Funet network includes all universities and almost all State research organizations. CSC is responsible for the network's operation.
Free channels on your own PC
Funet Antenna's most important benefit is watching regular TV on a PC which functions as the engine for other uses. Funet Antenna is a joint communication channel for all Funet users. Members of the Funet community have better opportunities than before for disseminating and receiving members' own content on their own TV channels. Currently available channels include:
- all Finnish free-to-air television channels
- some free Finnish cable tv channels
- commercial pay TV channels (for a fee)
- Funet member broadcasts, such as seminars and events from universities (multiple channels)
- local community tv channels (currently NopolaNews, and piloting OUBS)
- ResearchChannel - 24/7 science channel
In the future, Funet Antenna will also make it possible to watch the following broadcasts:
- video on demand - subject to a subscription fee
- public events, such as sessions of Parliament
- more free channels
- possibility to broadcast organisations own programs beyond Funet-Antenni to other cable or IPTV distributors
By using a separate adaptor, users also gain access to eight satellite TV channels and pay TV channels. The quality of the image and voice transmitted through Funet Antenna corresponds to the digital TV image of satellite, antenna and cable networks.
