Funet TV laboratory has been designed to cater for the needs of live streaming, media-archiving, visualization and videoconferencing by offering various conversion, editing and testing possibilities for audio and video material. It has been custom built in a sound and light proof space with cable connections to a server room for noisier hardware. It has also been connected with audio and video cables to a our computer classroom  and the multipurpose studio so that we can monitor, record and broadcast events organized in them.

The other main uses of the laboratory are audiovisual  experiments, tests, conversions and postprocessing. For internet distribution we use various codecs and servers in our server facilities. Usually with either Realmedia or MPEG encoding. Besides Internet we support at least the following distribution mediums: DVD, DV, DVCAM, DVCPro, BetaCAM SP, VHS, S-VHS and U-Matic.
