CSC environment on Vuori

A short description of user environment, shells, operating system, etc.

Vuori is part of the CSC computing environment. However, the full CSC computing environment is available on Vuori only on its login nodes. This means, among other things, that on the login nodes of Vuori one will have the same home directory and the same default shell to use as in the other CSC systems.

Before sending a batch job for execution you can, on a login node, copy all necessary files and programs for a batch job from the directories seen globally in the CSC environment to local directories of Vuori (seen only on the login nodes and compute nodes of Vuori). For examples see Chapter Running programs (batch and interactive). The default user shell in the CSC computing environment is tcsh. However, for batch jobs the Bourne shell (sh) or GNU Bourne Again Shell (bash) are recommended due to portability reasons. Bash is normally the default shell in Linux systems but also other available shells can be used (like tcsh on Vuori). For information on using Linux and CSC environment can be found on the new Data Services Guide , especially on its chapters 2. Linux basics for CSC, 4 Directories at CSC, 5 Managing files in CSC environment and Appendix 1. List of linux commands discussed in this guide.

Vuori has Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5.7 operating system that provides all commonly used Linux utilities and tools for Vuori users on all the login nodes. Compute nodes have Community ENTerprise Operating System (CentOS) version 5.7.
