Hippu: HP ProLiant DL580 G7 and DL785 G5 server pair

Hippu: two HP ProLiant DL580 G7 and two DL785 G5 servers Hippu: two HP ProLiant DL580 G7 and two DL785 G5 servers
The application service Hippu consists of two ProLiant DL580 G7 and two DL785 G5 servers from Hewlett-Packard. The service is aimed for interactive and serial jobs which require a significant amount of memory, and for the usage of the graphical interfaces of the application software. There is no batch queuing system on the servers. Parallel jobs are recommended to be run in Vuori super cluster or Louhi supercomputer

Due to the architectural differences caused by the installation of the more modern server pair, a user who connects to the network name hippu.csc.fi is redirected either to hippu1.csc.fi or hippu2.csc.fi (the older servers), depending on their load. A user who wants to connect to the new server pair has to connect directly to hippu3.csc.fi and hippu4.csc.fi. In the near future, the network name will be changed to point to the more modern pair. It is and it still will be possible to connect to each server directly, if necessary.

The operating system of hippu3 and hippu4 is the 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6 (RHEL 6). Hippu1 and hippu2, instead, use the older 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5 (RHEL 5). No batch scheduling system is installed on the application servers. Instead, the users log into the system and start their jobs by themselves.
Each G7 server is equipped with four eight-core Intel Xeon X7560 Processors, 2,26 GHz and 1 TB of memory. The G5 servers provide eight quad-core AMD Opteron 8360 SE (Barcelona) 2.5 GHz processors, and 512 GB of memory each. All together, the service offers 128 cores and 3 TB of memory.

The theoretical peek performance of each core is 10 Gflop/s, thus the maximum peak performance of each server is  320 Gflop/s and that of the whole service is 1280 Gflop/s.  The older servers includes Nvdia Quadro® FX 5600 graphics boards, which can be used remotely to perform demanding graphical computation.

Having big shared memory is a special feature of these application servers. HP ProLiant and DL580 G7 and DL785 G5 are extensively scalable x86_64 –servers, aimed for applications demanding big memory.
There is a wide collection of application software in Hippu. The server offers the software development environment of CSC, which helps users to produce their own program codes. The software development kit includes Fortran, C and C++ compilers (PGI, PathScale, GCC and Intel) and the most common libraries.
The system was taken into use during January 2009 with the first two servers, and it got upgraded with the new server pair in January 2012.
