The European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) enables access
to computing resources for European scientists and researchers from all
fields of science, from High Energy Physics to Humanities.
EGI.eu is a foundation
coordinating
the resources of National Grid Initiatives (NGIs), creating a
pan-European resource. Unlike previous fixed term grid- projects
(e.g. EGEE and DEISA), EGI.eu has been designed and established to
provide a sustainable operating model and will ensure the long-term
availability of a secure high-quality e-Infrastructure for all
European research communities. The resources offered by EGI can also
be used by Finnish researchers through CSC and the Finnish national
grid-infrastructure.
The core of EGI are the national grid organizations of the member countries (FGI in Finland). Within EGI these local grids joined together with the Geant data network and common middlewares like EMI. In addition to computing, storage and network services, the National Gird Initiatives will provide en user support and training to enable new user communities to benefit from this pan European resource.
A four-year project called EGI-InSPIRE supports and co-funds EGI.eu operations.
