Unlike PROSITE, PRINTS uses series of motifs (fingerprints) to characterize protein families. The biological context of motif neighbours increases the diagnostic reliability. PRINTS, maintained in University of Manchester, is based on manual selection of motifs and their improvement by iterative searches against SwissProt-SPTrEMBL, followed by manual annotation. The motifs are stored as ungapped local alignments.
