CSC's Rahti cloud service now open for beta use

CSC's new cloud service Rahti, which is based on container technology, has been opened for beta use. Rahti is available for use by CSC's higher education institution and research institute customers.

Container technology is one of the biggest new technological breakthroughs in the IT sector. Compared to virtual servers, container technology is more streamlined, more scalable and easy to transfer and copy.

In container technology, containers run isolated from each other over a shared operating system kernel. Rahti uses Linux and the Red Hat OKD (formerly OpenShift Origin) Kubernetes distribution. The application containers on the Rahti platform contain the rest of the operating system, program libraries and other necessary services as well as applications themselves. The number of containers used can be quickly and easily increased or decreased.

– Rahti is a next generation cloud platform that makes running fault tolerant and scalable applications considerably easier. Rahti moves maintenance-related work from the user to the platform. When it comes to software development, Rahti offers the user an easier way to launch their own web application on the Internet, and, for example, CSC's Notebooks uses Rahti as a platform, explains Risto Laurikainen, Rahti cloud platform Team Lead at CSC.

Rahti is a generic platform, on which it is possible to run a wide variety of applications, including everything from web servers and databases to scientific computing applications and data analysis. For example, it is possible to deploy one's own Spark cluster for big data analysis in Rahti with just a couple of clicks.  Rahti opens up a wide range of new use cases together with CSC's new systems, such as the Allas common object storage system.

Access to Rahti can be obtained through CSC's new customer portal, my.csc.fi (beta).
