WIDE – Open Source Science is a multidisciplinary three-day event in which the competitors will be challenged to develop solutions for promoting open science practices. The event is addressed to people who feel that science belongs to everyone and that is should be free, transparent, accessible and as comprehensible as possible. WIDE will be held at Leipätehdas in Helsinki on 26–28 October 2018.
WIDE – Open Source Science will be organized in cooperation by CSC, The National Library of Finland, the University of Helsinki IT Center and Helsinki Think Company. This multidisciplinary event is targeted at audiences of all ages from data scientists and software developers to social scientists and humanities scholars. WIDE has two components: the hackathon challenge focusing on coding and data visualization, and a multidisciplinary concept design competition. In the Hackathon challenge, unique data sets on which the suggested solution can be based will be offered to the competitors.
During the weekend, the participants will get to familiarize themselves with the principles of open science and source code and have opportunities for networking with operators in this field. In addition, they can look forward to experiential activities in the urban environment of Leipätehdas. Each participating team will receive mentoring related to their idea from experts of the field. The goal will be proposing different solutions that promote the accessibility, openness and inclusiveness of science.
In keeping with the values of open science, the solutions brainstormed by the hackathon participants will be shared on the open GitHUB service, where they can be used by anyone. The culmination of the event will be the final, where the teams will present the solutions developed by them during the weekend. Prizes will be given to the best ideas. Applications to the event will be received until 11 October 2018. For more information and instructions, please visit the event website.
