Applying for Computing Resources
The upcoming deadlines for resource applications:
Wednesday, February 1st, 2017 at 10 am
Monday, February 27th, 2017 at 10 am
You can apply for your project additional computing resources by filling an application form on the Scientist's User Interface. You may apply for computing resources for your academic CSC project only.
Please note that computing resources cannot be granted to other types of projects (Personal group and scientific applications, for example Ansys and Gaussian).
Apply for additional resources on Scientist's User Interface's My Projects page (the link takes you to the login page, from where you'll be redirected to My projects page after singing in)
Please estimate how many billing units (bu) your project will use in about 3-6 months. It is advisable to apply for more CPU time well before the current computing resources are used up. The maximum grant per application is 5 million billing units. Computing resources are applied to a certain server. You may have to agree to follow service specific terms and conditions for your use of application software and databases.
|Server||Classificatoin||Form of Use||System|
|Sisu||Supercomputer/distributed memory||Parallel use||Cray XC40|
|Taito||Supercluster/distributed memory||Serial and parallel use||HP ProLiant SL230s Gen8|
|CSC-Pouta||IaaS Cloud computing||Serial and parallel use||HP ProLiant SL230s Gen8|
Disk space for projects
At the moment a user in a computing project may have a 5 TB $WRKDIR disk space at maximum. For needs more than that you may apply for a project bound disk space. This kind of disk space will be usually granted for the time span of the project but we may change this policy if necessary. You can send the application by email before the application form will be implemented in Scientist's User Interface. The following items should be explained in the application:
- Project code (e.g. ay1888, hy1999)
- Requested total disk space for the project (TB)
- A scientific and technical justification for the disk space request
- Time span of the need
The application should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Principles of allocating resources
The computing and data storing resources are allocated by the CSC Resource Allocation Group (email@example.com). The Resource Allocation Group accepts applications from researchers continuously and holds meetings mainly every three weeks.
The applications are measured by their scientific effectiveness and quality (e.g. scientific publications). The Resource Allocation Group follows closely the national science policy and the priorities defined by the Finnish Government. Computing resources are mainly focused for national research use. The Resource Allocation Group reports to CSC's Board of Directors and the Ministry of Education of the allocated resources once a year.
The CSC Resource Allocation Group consists of a chairman, specialists in various disciplines, and persons responsible for the preparation of resource allocations. The specialists are nominated on ground of their scientific and technological expertise and experience. The resource applications will be accompanied by an advisory opinion from CSC's other specialists when needed.
If the researcher is not satisfied with how his or her application has been handled, the researcher has the right of appeal to the CSC Resource Allocation Group by sending email to firstname.lastname@example.org. The CSC Resource Allocation Group will handle any requests and either correct the mistake or give a response. If the researcher is unsatisfied with this response, the researcher then has the right of appeal to the CSC's Board of Directors.
