null CSC and KAMK to launch a Data Analytics Accelerator in Kainuu

CSC – IT Center for Science Ltd. and Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (KAMK) are launching a project to speed up the use of data analytics in companies in the Kainuu region. The data-driven economy has been widely recognized as a new mode of doing business, and data analytics, big data and artificial intelligence are today key methods for leveraging large-scale competitiveness for companies.  Companies accumulate great volumes of data from such sources as technical processes, sensors, information systems and customer interfaces – and analyzing this data helps them understand and anticipate the underlying phenomena and interdependencies.

The Data Analytics Accelerator project will create a straightforward process for using data analytics. It will enable companies and organizations operating in the Kainuu region to rapidly test the benefits that data analytics could offer them and introduce solutions based on it.

While CSC's expertise is based on long-term national activities focusing on data analytics and extensive international cooperation, in the Kainuu region CSC is a relatively new player. CSC's Kajaani data center started operating in 2013, and in the last year, CSC has also brought activities focusing on data analytics to Kajaani.

– As a long-term developer of data analytics, CSC has gained a sound and down-to-earth understanding of how data can be processed into knowledge and how it can be used to benefit the organization. In this rapidly developing field, widely different solutions and promises are emerging all the time, and we thus see it as our duty for Finnish society to offer a more extensive outlook bridging a longer time span on the opportunities offered by data analytics, explains Aleksi Kallio, a Development Manager with CSC.

Kajaani University of Applied Sciences has wide networks with local operators. KAMK will help CSC find the right local actors, while CSC will support KAMK in selecting suitable data analytics solutions.

– KAMK has been working on its strategy for supporting intelligent solutions and training experts specializing in them. The Data Analytics Accelerator will be a significant operation making it easier for companies to obtain expertise in developing data-intensive business. KAMK is about to apply data analytics and engineering skills to using data as the basis of doing business in its education programs. Cooperation with companies and other actors will lay the foundation for attractive and meaningful education in this field for the needs of Kainuu and Finland alike, says Matti Sarén, President of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences.

CSC and KAMK have collaborated on CEMIS, the centre for measurement and information systems. The accelerator project deepends that collaboration and allows companies in Kainuu region to benefit from expertise created within CEMIS. The other partners of CEMIS are University of Oulu, University of Jyväskylä and VTT.

The Data Analytics Accelerator will carry out pilot projects on data analytics with three companies and organize workshops with 10 to 15 companies. The project will also communicate about the potential of data analytics to a larger group of companies. The Data Analytics Accelerator about to be launched will provide the impetus required for introducing new methods, which the companies would otherwise be unable to do without significant initial investments and competence. The project will be co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the municipalities in the region, as well as the participating companies Loiste Oy, Kaisanet Oy and Herman IT Oy.
