Workshop in Helsinki 9 May 2017: Research infrastructures’ perspectives on European Open Science Cloud

How European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) will be governed is being designed now. EOSC pilot project, in charge of trialing and designing a stakeholder driven governance framework for EOSC, invites research infrastructures to take part in the debate and plan of the future EOSC, and organizes a workshop in Helsinki on 9th May, 2017, in conjunction to the 6th ERIC RI networking meeting.

European Commission is at the moment engaging with member states and different stakeholders to make a plan and roadmap for the implementation of EOSC. The workshop in Helsinki addressing research infrastructures' perspectives on EOSC is the first in a series to invite different stakeholder groups to discuss and contribute in the design of EOSC governance framework. A stakeholder-driven governance framework with the involvement of all stakeholders will shape and oversee future development of the European Open Science Cloud.

– What EOSC will be like is being designed and discussed during the next months, since European Commission aims to publish the EOSC roadmap by the end of 2017, says Per Öster, Director at CSC – IT Center for Science.

– Representatives of ERIC, ESFRI and all research infrastructures are invited to participate in the workshop, Öster continues.

Open and trusted virtual environment for EU researchers

EOSC will provide all EU researchers a trusted virtual environment with free, open and seamless services for data storage, management, analysis, sharing, and re-use, across disciplines. It will integrate and consolidate horizontal e-infrastructures. The EOSC will federate existing and emerging thematic data infrastructures and scientific clouds, effectively bridging today's fragmentation and ad-hoc solutions.

– The EOSC will add value in terms of scale, data-driven science, inter-disciplinarity, and data to knowledge to innovation. It will also leverage current and past infrastructure investment, Öster says.

CSC is a partner in the EOSCpilot project (2017–2018), that supports the first phase in the development of the European Open Science Cloud.
