EXAM is a flexible and scalable solution for digitalizing conventional written exams and organizing various skills demonstrations in a supervised setting. It supports studying while speeding up and facilitating teachers' work and providing students with more flexible opportunities for sitting exams. Teachers can use the EXAM system to both set and assess different exams electronically. Students, on the other hand, can register for exams electronically, sit their exams at a time chosen by them, and later on also use the examination facilities of other higher education institutions.

The EXAM system was born from ten Finnish higher education institutions' desire to produce a completely new examination system meeting the needs and using the potential of an increasingly digital learning environment. The consortium has gradually grown from a small system project into an extensive higher education institution network. The EXAM consortium, which currently includes 27 higher education institutions, is in charge of maintaining the EXAM system and developing it further.

Through continuous improvement, the simple essay-form exam has been complemented with new question types, support for the maturity test process, and assessment tools. The consortium is currently focusing on functionalities for cooperation between institutions, including shared use of examination facilities and joint exams. CSC offers hosting services and supports the development work by offering the consortium tools and assistance with project management.

EXAM is also part of the DigiCampus development project coordinated by the University of Eastern Finland, which was launched in 2018. The EXAM consortium is responsible for a sub-project that will implement a national service portfolio for electronic examinations in 2018–2020.
