177 million euros R&D funding for Finland from Horizon 2020

Finland has secured €177 million R&D money from the European Union's Horizon 2020 (H2020) Research and Innovation programme so far. H2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020).

"With the forthcoming tighter government budget it is increasingly important for Finnish research organisations and companies to actively search for available EU funding", says Per Öster, Director of CSC's Research Infrastructures unit.

Up to now, over 4700 projects have been funded via the H2020 programme. Germany tops the list with 2759 project participations. Finland comes 12th on the list with 440 participations in H2020 projects. To date, CSC is part in ten H2020 projects, and as a third party in one project.

€6,7 million to CSC

If you take population into account, a different picture appears – making Finland the 6th best in H2020 funding. Luxembourg heads the list in terms of grant per person (42 euros), next is Netherlands with 37 euros, followed closely by Cyprus (36 euros), Denmark (35 euros), Ireland (34 euros) and Finland (33 euros).

The EU divides organisations receiving H2020 funding into five categories: higher or secondary education institutes, for profit organisations, non-profit research organisations, public bodies excluding research and education, and other organisations. CSC is the highest placed in the whole H2020 programme in the "other" category, placed at number 234 (situation 8/2015), when H2020 grants are sorted by monetary value. CSC has drawn together over €6,7 million H2020 funding so far. To date, the total value of H2020 grants committed (excluding EURATOM) is approximately €7,8 billion.

"Research is more and more happening in large international collaborations and it is crucial that we at CSC develop services in collaboration with research communities and our European peers to facilitate the participation of Finnish researchers in international collaborations. H2020 is an import funding instrument to make this happen very cost-efficiently", Öster continues.

CSC was the most successful large Finnish corporation in the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) which preceded the H2020 programme. In FP7, CSC was on board 27 projects (total monetary value € 11,4 million).
