Case University of Helsinki: Cloud computing enhancing the research of cancer

Lauri Aaltonen, Academic Professor, University of Helsinki is analysing genomes with his team to understand the causes of cancer.

"We need hundreds of terabytes of data and that is a significant challenge for us in terms of storage and analysis. To tackle these challenges cloud computing is an ideal solution for us. Human genome data is very sensitive and data security is a must."

In genetic research massive computing capacity is required as well as secure handling of sensitive data.

Hannes Lohi, Professor of Molecular Genetics, University of Helsinki:

"Our research group is interested in different genetic disorders and we are using dogs as a model to identify different change for different conditions. We use the next generation sequencing approach to identify the mutations. That requires heavy computing power and cloud services that we are using from CSC."
