CSC's data management and computing environment offers modern eco-friendly  equipment to solve the most  intricate challenges in science.


Puhti is a general purpose computing cluster that covers a broad range of use cases from interactive data analysis to medium scale simulations. Wide selection of scientific software is installed to Puhti. GPU-accelerated Puhti artificial intelligence partition (Puhti-AI) is specifically designed for AI research and AI applications. Puhti was launched in the September 2019.

Mahti is the robust supercomputer of CSC's national computing environment, taken into use in August 2020. Mahti is designed for medium to large scale simulations that require a huge amount of computing power and very capable interconnect. Mahti is the fastest supercomputer in the Nordic counties.

Cloud services

CSC's cloud services consists of cPouta, ePouta, Rahti and Notebook services. cPouta is a Community Cloud Service that provides virtual machines and storage for many tasks. ePouta is a Virtual Private Cloud Service especially meant for processing sensitive data. In ePouta security is taken to a whole new level. Data in cPouta and ePouta is stored in Finland. Rahti is a container cloud service and Notebooks is a cloud platform that provides easy-to-use environments for working with data and programming.

Allas is a common data management solution serving the entire CSC computing environment. Allas is for storing, sharing and analysing data. Allas is based on CEPH object storage technology and has a storage capacity of 12 Petabytes.

Kajaani data center

CSC's data center in Kajaani is located in Renforsin Ranta business park, which has been set up on the former premises of Kajaani mill. The electricity grid is very reliable and fast data communications networks are designed for HPC. CSC Kajaani data center is home to Finland's national data computing and data management environment and LUMI, one of the EuroHPC world-class supercomputers. CSC data centers do have the international ISO/IEC 27001 certificate.

Sustainable development

Reducing CO2 emissions is a globally critical target, to which the location of data centers have a huge impact, as supercomputers consume plenty of electricity. CSC’s data center in Kajaani has an abundant supply of environmentally-friendly hydropower, and warm water cooling which enables waste heat to be utilized in the district heating network of Kajaani.

LUMI, one of EuroHPC's world-class supercomputers, will start to operations in CSC's data center in Kajaani, Finland in next year (2021). LUMI will be one of the world’s fastest computer systems and one of the most advanced platforms artificial intelligence. This investment will make CSC’s data center one of the world’s largest players in the field of high-performance computing.
