Additional Information
Content etc.: Practical matters:

This is a basic introduction to R, meaning that no prior experience with R is assumed, we start from scratch. We also cover only basic usage in order to keep it accessible to participants from all fields. This means for example that we do not cover any specialized methods from any field. However, knowledge of basic statistical methods, such as testing hypotheses and fitting simple linear models, is useful but also not strictly necessary. In other words, the aim of this course is to give the participants a solid understanding of the basics, so that further learning is easier.

The topics covered include:

  • RStudio user interface and workflow
  • Execution of commands in the R interpreter
  • Basic data structures and types (vectors, factors, data frames etc.)
  • Reading in data and handling data
  • Basic analysis and plotting
  • "Hadley-verse": tidy data and ggplot2

Questions and suggestions about the contents are welcome. You are also encouraged to bring your own existing dataset and/or code you may have to be studied during the exercises.

The training class is equipped with Linux/Windows workstations, either OS can be used during the course. You can also bring your own laptop if you wish. Be sure to install R and RStudio on it before the course.
