The 2nd phase of the CSC's supercomputer (Sisu) was opened for the users on 9.09.2014, the 2nd phase of the supercluster (Taito) is expected to be available for the researchers in Autumn 2014. 2nd phase of Sisu and Taito will open new possibilities for Finnish researchers - they increase the available computing capacity 5-fold. During the seminar the new systems will be presented to researchers, helping to benefit from them from day 1, and getting the feedback in order to have the systems configured according to your needs.
This is an opportunity for administration staff dealing with doctoral training to learn more about open science, to present comments to the ministry on improvements to the existing open science services and possibly create ideas for new ones. Debugging is inevitable when developing software, and parallelism adds another layer of complexity on top of it. A good parallel debugger, such as Totalview, is a very important tool for development of scientific software. This workshop is an introduction to debugging parallel software with TotalView and MemoryScape and ReplayEngine utilities available on CSC's Cray XC30 supercomputer Sisu and HP Proliant SL230s supercluster Taito.

New features and efficient use of the PERCH Complete Spectral Analysis tool.
The course consist of two parts (i.e. days). The first day focus on the particle based methods, algorithms and implementations for the simulation of strongly non-linear mechanics like fragmentation, glacier calving, growth, granular material, etc.. The second day is devoted to dynamics of plasmas and various methods for simulating the dynamics of interstellar matter, the Earth's magnetosphere, fusion plasma and stars. Lecturers are national and international top-level scientists within their own field of research.

This course introduces the basic concepts of the Python programming language and how it can be used effectively in high-performance computing. Fast array interface (numpy), message-passing interface (mpi4py), and several other useful Python packages such as scipy and matplotlib are introduced. C extensions, i.e how to integrate code written in C directly as a part of a Python program, are also shown. Examples include prototyping and solving numerical problems with Python, steering simulations with Python scripts and analyzing results with the help of Python.

This course provides a tutorial-style introduction to the essential, practical computational tools for life science research, with a focus on the infrastructure provided by CSC. The topics will include, e.g., managing your datasets, running analysis on a grid or a computer cluster, Unix power use, and basics of R programming. The workshop is aimed for graduate students in the field, providing a comprehensive overview on the tools of the trade, without forgetting the important aspect of network building.

This mini-workshop is targeted for new or future users of CSC's Cray XC30 service Sisu. During the workshop, the Sisu system and its computing environment will be briefly introduced. The remaining time will be spent on porting users' applications onto the system with consultancy and tips from the instructor.

B2Share Nordic aims to engage Nordic research communities in developing the EUDAT B2Share service for storing and sharing their research data. In the project, the requirements and needs of communities are surveyed and B2Share's interface is customized with community specific metadata extensions.
Accelerators such as GPUs have broken through in today's HPC architectures. This course covers the more advanced topics in GPU programming with the CUDA language and the new OpenACC standard for directive-based accelerator programming. The course will focus on improving the performance and the scalability of GPU codes by analyzing them with performance tools, identifying bottlenecks, and making algorithm adjustments.
