Debated growth mechanism of carbon material explained through atomic level simulations

Since early on, there has been a debate as to what physical processes are involved in the growth mechanism of dense amorphous carbon films, which contain a high degree of tetrahedral diamond-like carbon atoms. These films have excellent mechanical properties resembling those of diamond. Because of the impossibility to study the atomistic picture of film growth experimentally, many efforts have been made during the last 30 years to provide an explanation based on computational simulation.

Expertise in higher education institution authentication being brought to primary schools

Efforts to solve the problem of electronic user authentication in universities and universities of applied sciences were begun nearly twenty years ago. Primary and secondary school actors have occasionally expressed interest in Haka, a network comprised of Finnish higher education institutions and partners, whose member organization users can access Haka services using the login for their own institution. A couple years ago, the Ministry of Education and Culture Department for General Education and Early Childhood Education began to fund the development of a solution for use in organizations of primary and secondary education – MPASSid.

Case study: University of Jyväskylä and Funet Backup

The backup pilot project jointly carried out by the University of Jyväskylä and CSC is making rapid progress. In the project, which involves the introduction of the Funet Backup service, backup copies of all material kept by the University of Jyväskylä will be produced for CSC. After that, the university will no longer have to maintain an in-house backup infrastructure. The project has been quite extensive and there is still a great deal of work to do. However, the lessons learned during the pilot project will augur well for the future.

EU General Data Protection Regulation – what should we know about it?

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was ratified in the spring of 2016 and steps are being taken to make the new regulation applicable during the two-year transition period, which ends on 25 August 2018. The aim of the GDPR is to provide up-to-date, comprehensive and uniform data protection for the European Union. In addition, an effort is being made to improve the level of confidence in online services, thus promoting the development of the EU's internal digital market. Now is a good time to learn more about the regulation and give thought to how organizations, such as higher education institutions, should prepare themselves for the changes that it will bring about.
