
HPC-Europa3 – travel, learn, compute and collaborate
HPC-Europa3 programme funds international research visits requiring HPC. So far the programme has been a great success with over 200 satisfied visitors.
Sensitive data is any data that contains personal information, which can be used to directly identify a specific person. Sensitive data includes personal identity numbers, genetic data or spatial data. Human genetic data can be used to develop better drugs, prevent diseases and choose the best treatment, such as for cancer patients. Indeed, sensitive data is a very hot topic right now, because it has been found that it can be used in a variety of ways in different types of research.
Over the past three years, over 500 TB of sequencing data from Finnish research samples was transferred over fibre optic cable from the United States to Finland. The licensed and protected data were transferred to Finnish biobanks and will significantly contribute to the study of genetic diseases.
Decision support systems are currently available for all medium and large companies around the world. Professor Ralf Östermark presents a paradigm shift to modern "Executive decision support", where planning and budgeting are made more efficient and the coordination in the management group is improved. The built-in components of the system provide possibilities to more diverse risk modelling and the coverage of larger sets of alternatives than what is possible through traditional risk analysis. Furthermore, the artificial intelligence based HPC-platform GHA allows unique possibilities to connecting holistic firm models with corporate technology involving challenging computational problem solving.
Genomitieto avaa uusia mahdollisuuksia sairauksien diagnosointiin ja hoitoon. Suomeen suunnitteilla oleva Genomikeskus tulee toimimaan genomitiedon käytön asiantuntijana. Sen tehtävänä on tehostaa genomitiedon vastuullista käyttöä ihmisten terveyden edistämiseksi ja hallinnoida kansallista genomitietokantaa.
In winter 2018 two PhD students, Armin Iravani from Austria and Juris Vencels from Latvia got their HPCE3 grants and headed for Finland and CSC. They did not come to CSC primarily because of the HPC resources but to deepen their collaboration with their hosts here at CSC.
Since early on, there has been a debate as to what physical processes are involved in the growth mechanism of dense amorphous carbon films, which contain a high degree of tetrahedral diamond-like carbon atoms. These films have excellent mechanical properties resembling those of diamond. Because of the impossibility to study the atomistic picture of film growth experimentally, many efforts have been made during the last 30 years to provide an explanation based on computational simulation.
Frederick Gent participated in the HPC-Europa Transnational Access programme and visited Finland three times in 2010-2011. These visits led to close collaboration, scientific breakthrough and a new home country. Currently he works as a Post-doctoral research associate at Aalto University.
Mathematic modelling has been a standard tool for engineers for decades, but in clinical medicine, it is still a newcomer. The Finnish start-up software company Disior Ltd. develops computational software for treating bone fractures. The purpose is to bring mathematical modelling, known for its benefits in research and industry, available for physicians.
The Open Science and Research Forum was held on 16 November 2017 at Congress Centre Paasitorni in Helsinki. The theme of the forum was open access to knowledge and scientific publishing. The achievements of the Open Science and Research (OSR) project were presented at the forum, with the focus being moved to the future, to the time after completion of the project. Launched by the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2014, the OSR project promotes access to knowledge and open science. It is based on extensive co-operation between ministries, higher education institutions, research institutes and providers of research funding.
Cloud services have risen from the rough-and-tumble of start-ups to the desks of IT decision-makers, thus making the term 'cloud' a household word. Of course, the name of a cloud service does not say a whole lot about it, and descriptions sometimes leave a bit to be desired. The following description shines some light on the world of clouds.
Some fifty attendees, broadly representing the leading edge of research and development in the Finnish electromechanical industry. The final seminar of the SEMTEC project presented the project results achieved over the past couple years, such as faster, more user-friendly and more accurate simulation models. Several of the presentations shared a common denominator: the Elmer tool, which is an open source multiphysical simulation software developed primarily by CSC. The expertise gained during the project was distilled into new features for Elmer.
Our knowledge of human genome will increase dramatically over the coming years. The use of genome data will also penetrate into healthcare. A whole new field has sprung up as a result of these developments, offering companies opportunities to create new products such as medical applications.
