"I work as Development Manager at CSC and I'm responsible for the development of Funet services and for offering them to Finnish universities, universities of applied sciences, research institutions, agencies and other Funet members in the customer interface.

The best thing about my work is the fact that there is so much interaction with different types of people. Services at different stages of their life cycles involve a broad range of different customer work: the tasks range from the construction of new services and piloting to the preparation of the phaseout of discontinued services in cooperation with customers.

I came to CSC after working several years as a telecommunications expert at a commercial teleoperator during my studies. My view was that the decisions prompted by conflicting pressures of market forces were not always on a sustainable basis in terms of quality or in the customers' interest. Thus, at the time of my graduation, when browsing through job vacancies at Usenet News, I noticed that CSC was seeking new members to its expanding Funet telecommunications team. The job application was soon on its way!

My tasks at CSC have changed over the years. At first I was responsible for the maintenance of telecommunications services and sysadmin work. In my current managerial job, I'm responsible for customer interface and development matters. Together with my team and several CSC-internal stakeholders, I'm responsible for ensuring the high quality of Funet services and for the development and productization of new services. The work also includes maintaining contacts with Funet customers and arranging events for them. Every day, I meet many people, such as members of operating groups and teams responsible for different services. I also take part in decision-making as a member of project steering groups and management teams. CSC supports the development of its staff members in their jobs. It's up to you to decide how you want to develop the things you do in your job.

I'm a Master of Science by training, specializing in data networks and applications. However, people wouldn't necessarily call me a typical computer geek. My training has provided a good basis for learning new things even though it soon became clear to me after graduation that the Master of Science degree is just 'written proof that you have completed a project' as my first supervisor at CSC once said. Of course, it's essential to learn the basics of telecommunications through training but applying the basics to practice in the ever-changing environments requires much more. The fact that I have an open personality and I'm ready to accept challenges has served me well during my career.

As its name suggests, CSC is an IT center for science but the range of different work tasks in the company is nevertheless quite impressive. Even though CSC has a large number of people with a university degree on its payroll, the atmosphere is relaxed and people are willing to share expertise with their colleagues. This culture of doing things together has always been one of the strengths of CSC and it explains why this is such a great workplace."
