Elmer is one of the most popular open-source mulit-physics Finite Element Method (FEM) codes. See the CSC Elmer pages for more information and visit elmerfem.org for technical information on the program package.
Elmer FEM Course is intended for persons with none or some prior knowledge of Elmer but some background on the solution of partial differential equations. The course will cover the use of Elmer through its graphical user interface, ElmerGUI. Also command-line operation of Elmer will be explained. The course will also include the basics of parallel computing and writing user subroutines with Elmer.
After the course the participants should be able to solve basic modeling problems themselves, modify them manually, and have basic knowledge on the general features of Elmer software.
Elmer FEM Course will be followed by a programming day that is intended for people who are working with their own developments.
9.30 Introduction to Elmer finite element software
An overview of the structure and capabilities of Elmer software is given. Also the graphical user interface ElmerGUI is demonstrated setting up a simple case.
11.00 Hands-on session using ElmerGUI (hands-on)
The participants will go through simple exercices using ElmerGUI. Some of the cases can be chosen individually to best suite the profile of the participants (heat transfer, fluid dynamics, structural mechanics and electromagnetics).
13.00 Elmer structure explained & hands-on session continued
In this session we explain the content of the Elmer files, the structure of Elmer simulation and demonstrate how to run Elmer cases from the command-line interface. Thereafter the users can continue to work with the example cases.
15.00 Alternative pre- and postprocessers
The use of Elmer with other pre- and postprocessors is discussed. Including a demo on the integration between SALOME and Elmer

10.30 Programming user functions and solvers in Elmer
User defined functions and custom solvers are explained and examples are shown. Also the creation of menu structures for user solvers is explained.

The parallel computing principles and practices of Elmer is explained along the lines of examples.
15:00 Parallel Computing demo on supercomputer
15.30 Miscellaneous topics & User problems
The last session can be tuned based on the wishes of the participants. The participants can continue to study some cases or we can go through some miscellaneous topics based on the interest of the audience. Such topics could include
